Post 6- Sonnet Parody

Recalling the notes from our introduction to Comedy, a parody is a style of comedy that mocks a subject through imitation. A good example would be Weird Al Yankovic's song 'Smells Like Nirvana,' which is a parody of Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.' In this case, the song by Weird Al imitates the instruments and lyrics of Nirvana's original to a comedic effect.

For this week's blog, you will be posting a parody of Shakespeare's 'Sonnet 18'

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate;
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date;
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Your sonnet must be in iambic pentameter (10 syllables per line) and 14 lines long (3 quatrains and a couplet) with the following rhyme scheme ABAB CDCD EFEF GG.

Here is an example:

A Sonnet for Sherbert

Shall I compare thee to a chocolate cake?
Thou art more fruity and more exotic.
Good cake is often difficult to make
Especially for me, I'm moronic...
Sometime I will find a good recipe
And make the best cake in the whole wide world,
But until then we'll have to wait and see
And to sherbert land I will be hurled.
But my dreams of chocolate will never fade
With sherbert ready in my freezer,
It is easier to get delayed
If only making cake were easier!
So long as I continue on the path
I'll eat sherbert, and await chocolate's wrath.

Sonnets are due by 3pm, Friday 1/10/14.

  1. I once caught an animal in my trap
    I was not prepared for what was in it
    I was sure its leg was about to snap
    Oh the fire was about to be lit
    This animal looked like it was so mean
    So I told my buddy to grab the gun
    When he came back my face turned green
    and then all he said was lets have some fun
    seeing his smile, my spirits looked up
    he looked me in the eye and said get back
    said he would drink the blood, “get me a cup”
    Then when I’m done we can eat him for snack
    The animal was indeed a house cat
    So he clubbed it in the head with a bat

  2. Shall I compare thee to an ATM?
    Thou art greedier and much less helpful.
    You are more expensive than a great gem.
    Trying to please you is impossible.

    If we ever divorce I’ll be less poor.
    Why don’t you get a job to help support?
    I should have let you walk right out that door,
    And straight to your mother’s from the airport.

    At least the ATM gives a receipt.
    That is more than I have gotten from you.
    You never make me anything to eat.
    I am so sick of how little you do.

    I set down money and it disappears.
    You will only ever leave me in tears.

  3. Shall I compare thee to a rabid dog?
    Or perhaps a Noble Peace Prize winner?
    Your attitude leaves my head in a fog
    As you arrogantly demand dinner

    Sometimes too hot and sometimes just too cold,
    Your moods fluctuate and leave me in awe
    Wondering how you dare to be so bold
    Strutting around as if you have no flaw

    Your eternal arrogance will not fade
    Or dim your devotion to your one love
    Funny to think that even in a raid
    Your self-worth inflates to heavens above

    Carly Simon sang of a man like you
    “You’re so vain” and that’s all we ever knew.

  4. shall i compare thee to a silly toy
    or compare you to a mini fighter
    may i add that you are a silly boy
    and as you hold you only grip tighter

    although you really love your toys and trucks
    i wish i could really hold you all day
    but i cant i have to learn to make bucks
    even though i cant stay i will not stray

    you are the silliest i really know
    it makes me happy to see you grow big
    especially how you play in snow
    i think that someday you will drive a rig

    i love you corey matt you are my bro
    i hope you will never ever go !

  5. Shall I compare thee to sweet fitness bliss?
    Thou art the most toned thing I have ever seen;
    Beautiful lines ask for a kind kiss;
    And thine eyes of diamond are oh so keen.
    Sometime I wish to grasp thine little hand;
    And then take you out onto the dance floor.
    If thou shalt fall, I will help you to stand;
    With you in hand, we might go out the door,
    But thine beauty shalt last forever.
    As we approach your lovely home, I say:
    "That remark, it really was quite clever."
    When you enter you will ascend and lay;
    So there went night, what a wonderful time;
    I hope morning should bring such a bright chime.

  6. Shall I compare thee to sparkling vamps
    Thou art more fantastic and magical
    You bring life to even the poorest tramps
    And you pick people up after they fall

    I have heard many people hate on you
    And often it's because of arrogance
    And those people aren't aware of what's true
    Because they have never been in your trance

    But whether it is dragons or mudbloods
    None shall awaken from your fantasy
    Nor shall they lose you in any big floods
    When reading it's like I'm in ecstasy

  7. Shall I compare thee to really good food?
    Thou art so different and so so cool.
    When I see you I do not drown in blood.
    You are not at like the very bland gruel.

    Great food is often very hard to make.
    Sometimes I make food really very swell.
    Sometimes I cook for fun or even bake.
    You are so pretty like the princess belle

    Thou art so sparkly and so so pretty
    Thou are not fat as you are rather thin
    You are so soft and nice like my kitty
    You are thin but, your slimy as a fin

    I kind of hope you see me as so cute.
    Just like your brand new 3010 ute.

    It opened up the day before Tuesday
    It is located in western Vermont
    You should get all the details on newsday
    I hope you come see this fantastic place
    It will bring you joy and you shall be happy
    It brings a smile to everyone’s face
    You won’t leave feeling the least bit snappy

    Shall I compare thee to a blondie babe?
    Thou art more lovely and more beautiful,
    May I make you some good broccoli rabe?
    To me, you are very, very crucial,
    All the time, you tend to look too dang hot,
    Your complexion is so very perfect,
    That broccoli rabe is made in a pot,
    I see nothing about you imperfect,
    You are going to go very far, kid,
    You are just so very, very awesome,
    I bought you a present, here, it’s a squid,
    I finished the broccoli rabe, wane some?
    I must admit I have had on you such a crush,
    And I love you so very, very much. <3 :D

  10. Shall I compare thee to cotton candy?
    You are much more fluffy and much more white.
    Though the touch of you does not feel sandy,
    Never have I ever taken a bite.

    Some may say I love puffy clouds too much,
    I think my love for you is just enough.
    You look soft, I dream of taking a touch.
    Your appearance is far away from rough.

    On nice days, I see you in the blue sky.
    You’ve got lots of other friends that are clouds,
    but when you are not seen, I could just cry.
    I’m sure you float over very large crowds.

    The closest I could get is in a plane.
    The thought of that almost makes me insane.

  12. Another could not write as you did then.
    Your works are praised still through these many years.
    It seems evil to write with a new pen.
    Your words are sweeter on more open ears.

    Shakespeare, you wrote as a master would write,
    your comedies and tragedies on screens.
    Many feel wonder at the sound and sight.
    The actors play perfectly through the scenes.

    Though men cannot write so well as you did,
    your characters never cease to amaze.
    Let's recount a few greats with one small bit:
    Macbeth to Hamlet; and the lovers gaze.

    This is a paltry attempt to sum all.
    Though few are listed, all are great, none small.

  13. Shall I compare thee to a rotten toad?
    Thou art more angry and bitter than most.
    The others are shining as if they glowed,
    But with you, it does not even come close.

    Every time I see you I can't handle
    The sight and smell of big raunchy garbage.
    Everywhere else I can't see a scandal,
    With the people who are in a marriage.

    But thy eternal way I see by chance,
    That you can always stay back at your home.
    This way you won't have to see people dance,
    That have never even heard of a comb.

    So long as I can always see your face,
    I will always want to spray you with mace.

  14. Shall I compare thee to a wicked witch,
    Thou art more sinister and unsightly.
    Your voice is annoying, it makes me twitch.
    If you were not crazy I'd be friendly.

    Your magic chants are nothing but mumbles.
    I hope you stop because they annoy me.
    Your house needs some repair, it's in shambles.
    While flying on your broom, please hit a tree.

    But if thy ever stops nagging neighbors,
    There may be less 'For Sale' signs on her street.
    Try to stop irritating behaviors,
    And maybe you can find a man to meet.

    So long as you keep being the same you,
    So long I keep my hatred of you too.

    Suddenly as you run, trying to fight.
    To terrified to turn around and look back,
    Searching for hope but quickly losing sight.

    So human, so hurt. Mad and different.
    To kill my demons with asphyxiation
    This never ending pain is so persistent
    As my demons fight the suffocation.

    Sometimes your sins are hard to swallow
    they eat you alive and make you insane.
    Suddenly inside you feel so hollow
    And the more you suffer, it seems to rain.

    Silently you scream hoping to be saved
    Being understood is all you ever craved.

    Shall I compare thee to a ginger babe ?
    Thou art more lovely and gingerly,
    Her glowing luscious red locks tend to fade,
    But her white pale skin shows oh so brightly,
    Your freckles count how many souls you can take,
    Oh The way you look into my blue eyes,
    And you can see my soul begin to shake,
    It leaves like it was stolen by a spy,
    Your corkiness is what I adore more,
    You make my heart beat very very fast,
    When I see your hair in the corridor,
    Your red hair is what i love first and last,
    As long as I can see and feel your hair,
    I feel as if I am alive and care.

    I enjoy thee, topped with lettuce and cheese,
    With salsa, you become perfectly fine,
    The smell of your grease, the ultimate tease,
    If you’re in my sight, you become all mine,
    You can be eaten all times of the day,
    With you in thy presence, I’m surely glad,
    You vanish quickly, but please try to stay,

    You keep me warm when it’s so cold outside
    You are way slower than my aunt Lotti,
    but I can’t wait for you to be my bride
    Your ugly face will never go away
    You are always waiting in my bed
    I’m so happy you will always stay,

  19. My roosters feathers are nothing like a cloud;
    Blood is far redder than his pets red fur;
    If whispers be quiet, why then his cackles are loud;
    If scales be coins, coins grow on his black bear.
    I have seen sunflowers are, yellow and black,
    But no such sunflowers see in his fair;
    And in some stenches are there fewer attacks
    Than in them that from my rooster leaks dear.
    I love to hear him crow, yet well I know
    That screaming is a far more pleasing cry
    I grant I never watched a phoenix glow;
    My rooster, when he stands, blends in boys.
    And yet, by heaven, I think he will taste as well
    As all the hens will bathy they will drip-dry.

  20. Shall I compare thee to my Anthony,
    My nephew has such an adoring face,
    He tries to walk and just falls on his knees,
    No one ever better spray him with mace.

    He always likes to eat a lot of food,
    He does not like his diapers or his pants,
    He prefers to run around in the nude,
    When he wears his pants he has a weird stance.

    He does not like to eat a lot of soup,
    He would much rather play than drink his milk,
    He likes to eat his cheerios and poop,
    When he drinks his milk his skin is soft like silk.

    When I lay down and cuddle him to sleep,
    He enjoys listening to my heartbeat.

    You will always have an aunt who will be there,
    Watching you grow up while you crawl walk and run,
    I will be there to cherish you and always care,
    I know always being with you will be so fun.

    I'll never forget the day you were born,
    Thinking of you is all that I do,
    Without you I would be so very torn,
    You will always have me to look up to.

    Your skin is like the oceans sparkling sand,
    So soft and smooth with a beautiful tone,
